    End grain joints ?

I recently acquired some nice kiln dried S4S oak of varying widths but most of it is less than 24" long. I could use some of this in upcoming projects but ideally I would like to make some longer lengths. I know that molding manufacturers amongst others use finger joints but is there another way...

I am finishing up a dining room set and have come to the table top. In the past I have always ran the boards down the length of the table and occasionally I slap a breadboard on the end. The cherry I am using was given to me by the client. I would not use it, but it has sentimental value to her...

    Grain Filler

I have some red oak that has been air dried and outside for several years. I moved it into my shop about 6 month ago to get it ready to use when I had time. What direction should the grain go?

When cutting a cross out of 1/8th or 1/4" hardwood, what direction should the grain run? If it runs in the direction of the "arms" then length of the cross is at risk of breaking along the grain and visa versa. I do not want to piece together the wood first to allow for the grain change.

    End Grain Question

Not sure if this should go here or in "Finishing", anyway here goes: What do you do to get a bowl (or other turned object) to finish evenly? I have been using either Waterlox or Danish Oil on the bowls I have turned thus far and always get massive absorption of finish in a couple spots...

I got some mistery "scrap" wood yesterday from a very generous member. I made this chopping block out of it. Any idea as to what kind of wood it might be? It is very hard, chips out pretty easy, heavy, kinda olive-green in color, no distinct or unique smell. And another question, what else...
