Got a new wood burner last week and tried my hand at it over the weekend. Last year I figured out how to make some boat paddles and painted them and sold quite a few at some of the area craft shows. My biggest problem was not wanting to cover up the grain of the beautiful wood with paint. So, problem solved. I bought a wood burner and am burning the artwork onto the paddle so that the grain still shows. I will also be painting some, but I really like the wood burner!!
Well, I guess I didn't do the pictures right so here goes again.....

Those do look very nice, and reminds me a lot of scrimshaw!

BTW, I'm very curious as to a "woodburner"; that wouldn't by any chance be a "wood-burning iron" of the kind I burned my finger on as a 6-year old kid when I got my hands on a wood-burning set (I still have the scar!)?

Thanks guys. It reminds me of scrimshaw too. I have always loved plain old ink drawings and carvings, something about the simplicity. And yes it is one of those wood burning kits, actually I didn't buy the kit since I didn't need the patterns or the wood, just the iron. Only $12 at Walmart!! :eusa_dancKind of looks like a soldering iron. Anyway, I have about 20 more to go and that should get me throught the first couple of shows. Luckily Allen's cypress comes in bundles and has lots of "scrap" to keep the ties from cutting into the good wood. The scrap is all mine!! I am going to put it to good use!

Carla, if you want to paint, but still show the wood grain, try latex paint, thinned 50/50 or more. I'm still experimenting with it, but seems to do well.

Thanks again for all the encouragement!! I have 5 more paddles that I am working on today so hopefully I can get some more pictures posted soon. Then I guess I will start painting the others. Theo, I have thought about thinning my acrylics to give almost a watercolor effect, but haven't tried it yet. So many ideas...so little time!! I also make wax-dipped teddy bears to sell (they are used as air fresheners) and between that and keeping up with domestics, I have a lot of ideas that I haven't had time to pursue. Christopher, I absolutely LOVE your work!! If only I could do portraits like that!! Animate objects make me shudder!! :nah:My biggest attempt is birds and an occasional dog and a horrible attempt at dolphins, but never people!! Well, back to work! Thanks again!! ~~Carla
