I am using shellac on a walnut piece and then I will come back and lay lacquer over it (wife wants the lacquer). How long do I need to wait after sealing the walnut with shellac before I can put a 1st coat of lacquer? I was using a 2 lb cut of shellac.

Thanks for any help.

I normally wait a day and haven't had any problems.

Be sure you are using a dewaxed shellac or you may have problems.

I've waited only an hour or so. And finished just fine. Shellac is an evaporative finish, and once the alcohol has evaporated is won't do much further curing. Unlike Poly and other oil based finishes, which dry to the touch first and then continue to cure to their final hardness over the next couple of weeks. Waxed shellac can cause problem with oil based finishes, but shouldn't effect the finish adhesion of lacquer.

Thank you both for the responses. I was going to wait at least 24 hours. It is good to know that I can shorten that time period if need be.
