I need to seal the edges of a cheap wood/masonite bifold door that will be painted on both front and back with oil-based paint. I am thinking about using a couple of coats of polyurethane. Does this work or is there a better techniques?

Joe, you can use the same oil based paint to prime the edges just thin it down with about 30 - 40 % paint thinner to use it as a primer.

De-waxed shellac would be another method. Are you planning on painting the edges? Polyurethane doesn't even like to stick to itself, you might have some adhesion problems if you wanted to paint over it.

As said, you do not need to use a special finish to "seal" the edges of a door. When painting, the best sealer/first coat is a thinned coat of whatever paint you are using. Thin it 25-30% with mineral spirits. Apply it and let it dry. Then apply the subsequent coats thinned 10% for better flow out. The door edges will be just as "sealed" as the rest of the door.
