Frame mitered segment
Part 2 the base
Some folks use a 1 piece base, but because of possible wood movement I use a segmented base.
Segmented bases can be built with all the segments coming together in the center, but I have found that it is very hard to glue them and keep the points in the center straight.
Most times I will use a center plug.
Now that we have the segments glued up for the base (part 1) I will cut the center with a forstner bit.
Then turn a plug to fit it usually from a contrasting wood and glue it in place.

Now I have to flatten one side, sometimes I use my large disc sander and sometimes I put it in the cole jaws turn it flat then use my sanding stick (If I had a wide belt sander I would just run it through that, but not this po boy).

With one side flat I use TB2 and glue brown paper on a wooden face plate

with the face plate on the lathe glue the base to the brown paper, I use the tail stock to center it with the center mark left in the plug from turning it.

After 15 to 20 min. I turn the outside round and second side flat and sand it.

Part 3 we will glue some rings on and start turning (my style )
