Happened to me the Tuesday after Memorial day weekend (five years ago). I'll give you the same advice I was given then...
Take your time, you have been given a new opportunity. With luck, each of you was given a decent severance package so you'll have time to weigh your options, and think things through.
I spent about 3 months looking for a job in the same field, didn't look very hard though. Then I met a guy that I have/had very little respect for as a person. He ran a relatively successful business washing windows. Having been in the trades for most of my life (except for 6 years at a large blue company that shall remain nameless), I decided to start a handyman business.
It's been tough at times, scarier then **** a few times, but has always been satisfying. Find THE THING that you love. NO, not your wife, and not your kids. While they always come first, in this situation they don't count. Anyway, find that thing and then figure out how to make money at it.
Whatever it is that you want, be honest with yourself, and then go for IT with GUSTO!!!
Good luck!!!
