First time poster here...thanks in advance for your help.
I am looking for a company that would kiln dry approximately 3,000 - 5,000 BF of lumber for me per month.
Are there facilites like this out there that will dry lumber for third parties? I am preferably looking for something in the...
Hello all,
If I purchase air dried wood, or even green wood, will I be able to keep it in a shed while bringing down the moisture content (what %MC), then do the final drying in a controlled environment. Or should I do some kiln drying.
The woods in question are below:
-ERC
-R. Oak
-W. Oak...
Just turned a small bowl out of holly. I tried the alcohol method of drying. I rough turned the blank out of fresh cut holly 5 weeks ago today. After 3 weeks in my workshop the moisture was about 16%. I brought the piece into the house to finish drying. Last night the moisture content was 6%...
All,
So I've got my load of green QS Sycamore from Jeff up in the garage attic and ready to start drying.
My question is... some of it has Ambrosia, and what does this mean for air drying?
I've googled Ambrosia and found that it's caused by critters that burrow into the wood which in...
Hello all,
This maybe directed to the wood suppliers, but i have a question about finishing off some red oak i have been air drying.
I tested the stack last night with a mini-lingo moisture meter, and got several readings from 14 to 15 % with the wood type at 2, and ambient temp at 70deg f.

Hey all you sawyers out there, I have a few "old way" questions.....
I'm planning to air dry lumber. My hope is to start a collection of wood that drys so in a few years it'll be ready to be abused into furniture :-)
I want to work with a small, nearby lumber mill. They do boards as...
I have a question perhaps some of the sawyers or "driers" could help me with? I have a friend who has been air drying some eastern red cedar boards. He will bring them into an un-conditioned shop to acclimate for a month. If he uses it for indoor furniture should it be further kiln dried not...
hello everyone.
Back in early May I bought 100 bf of 8/4 walnut from Jeff. At the time it's mc was north of 35%. At the picnic, I took possession of 50 bf of Kyle's Dawn Redwood. Its mc was about 16%. I also got 100 bf of Jeff's green qsas and its mc was about 25%.
I stickered it on my...
I need a cheap way to finish drying small amounts of wood for projects. My wife will kill me if I drag anything else into the house. I can only wood down to about 12% to 14% moisture in my workshop. All my lumber is stored in racks under a shed. Here's my idea.
I have a stairway in my shop...
I recently bought some turning squares of Osage Orange and Tulipwood (2" x 2" x 12"). They are wax coated entirely. I checked their MC with my HF moisture meter  and it read around 14%. I plan to cut them into pen blanks. My question is if I should leave the wax coating on them or scrape...
I have a large walkup attic that gets pretty darn hot in the summer. I plan to stack some of Jeff's 8/4 wood up there to dry it and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and any thoughts or advice.

Does anyone have any experience drying beech or similar wood? All of the references i've found mark it as difficult to dry, prone to checking, splitting, and bowing. I was considering getting some green beech for a workbench, but with the difficulty drying i was wondering if i would ruin more...
Having brought home my 200 Bdf of black walnut last weekend I realize I am out of room for any more wood. I want to continue to buy wood from Jeff, but realize I need another option. So I am considering building a kiln. Can Anyone recommend good relatively simple plans for a kiln?
Thanks
Doug
I was wondering if and how to dry a green hollow form with DNA? I know for a bowl you rough turn to about 3/4 inch and wrap bottom half up to the opening with a brown paper bag but what do you do on a hollow form? I also would like to turn it bowl grain, is that possible? I have trued up one of...
Has anyone had any trouble with Minwax Polyurathane drying? The last two projects I've used it on has taken 3-4 days for a coat to dry. The weather here has been unusualy warm and dry. Can it be too old? I don't remember having any trouble with Minwax products before.
Ok folks, got a question. I just bought some walnut this am that was sawn into 4/4 about a month ago. After I stacked and stickered it in the attic of my workshop, I borrowed a moisture meter and took some readings. Except for the thick stuff, most of it is reading about 17%. How low can I...
