Wood Identification Help

Are these cookies coated with something like bar top epoxy? They appear to be. I have no clue about their id.

It’s not pine. This wood is as hard as a rock. I should have noted that on the first post. My first thought was also pine, but there is no way - this is way too hard...

The cadmium layer under the bark, as well as the bark itself both appear to be too thin for pine; it would seem more like a deciduous wood from the overall appearance and tighter growth rings. There are just too many native trees I am not familiar with. It resembles elm which can grow to 8-12" at the stump before dying. However, I just don't really know.
