maple turns well especially when green and is easy to come by in this area , look for wood beside the road where trees are being trimmed or most towns have a wood dump. turning bowls is lots of fun and very addicting.

I love maple or cherry especially both when green.
I'd avoid pine. I enjoy it and turn it but when starting off there are many better choices imo.
Pine can be hard to get a smooth finish on and be frustrating.
Turn whatever you can get is my bottom line answer! Only way to improve is to turn turn turn!

I'd choose maple as well. My first bowl was turned out of pine and like Andy mentioned, it is pretty difficult to get smooth. I don't think it will really make much of a difference, but I'd stay away from really hard woods for your first attempt. :thumbs_up:thumbs_up
