Been lurking around for a while but my first post; so hi, nice to be here:)

My mother, in north durham, has a mahogany buffet inherited from her family & recently a wet cloth was left on the top, badly damaging the finish- practically stripping it.
Unfortunately I don't know what was used for the finish, though i'm happy to provide/find out as much info as my mom will let me collect (don't think she'll let me test many solvents for fear of further damage)

Ideally I'd love to get in touch with a professional & hire them to refinish the patch, but I gratefully welcome any input:)!
(We are negative for covid, & very mask-happy, should you come over & work)

Thanks so much!

If it got damaged that easily, it is probably shellac. Dan O'Sullivan (dancam) is in Durham and an expert on shellac finishes. He'll probably see this post and respond. If not, try PM'ing him to see if he can help.

Since you're unsure about the finish, it's wise not to experiment with solvents. It's best to leave that to a pro. I'd recommend reaching out to local furniture restoration experts in Durham. They'll have the expertise to assess the damage and restore the finish without further harm. And it's great to hear you're taking safety precautions seriously – mask-happy is the way to go! Also, I once faced a water damage nightmare myself, and alldryus.com was a lifesaver. They provided top-notch restoration services. Maybe they could offer advice on your situation too.

That is a very nice piece of furniture.

Hoping someone can restore that beauty.

Please keep us posted, especially with some after pictures.
