Re-using painted or poly coated wood???

Hey Everyone,

Due to the Move we are thinking of selling our Maple butcher block kitchen table.

But I was wondering if I just cut the table up and used it for Bowl turning, I'd have a lot of maple. It's 1 1/4" thick x 2" wide and some of the boards are the full length of the table 4' 6".

Just wondering if I can throw it through the table saw and jointer and clean up the finish that is on it? And also clean up the blue painted legs the same way?

Can it be done?
Is it smart?
Will it hurt my saw blades/jointer and planer knives?
Will I need good ventilation?

I do not have all the answers to your questions but I have a stash of recycled heart pine boards with a decades old poly finish. I have removed the finish with my planer and used my other machines to get it to usable sizes. The only machine damage has been small nicks in the planer knives from imbedded grit (the boards had been used for bleachers). :wsmile:

Wow that sure is a nice haul~!

I knew another guy that got some of those for free. The military was just gonna throw it away.
