I am looking at getting a Pen Mandrel and hoping you guys can clarify some things for me.

#1 Morse Taper Maxi-Mandrel
http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKM-ELC.html

#2 Morse Taper Maxi-Mandrel
http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKM-FLC.html

#1 vs #2, not quite sure what these numbers mean as the specs listed for the #1 call it an included jaw while the specs for the #2 say it is spindle size. What determines if I need a #1 or #2

Penn also has keyless mandrels, are they worth getting?

Any other mandrel manufacturer recomendations? I kinda liked the description on this one

Steve your lathe will either have a #1 or a #2 morse taper on in the inside of the head. Look at the specs on your lathe and see what it says. I have a small Rikon lathe and it takes a #1 morse taper.

Cool, thnx. Was trying to figure out what pen kits I could use and thought #1 or #2 meant something like a fat pen or thin pen

I always thought the #1 and #2 had more to do with which types of pens you wanted to turn. :dontknow: But then again, I've come to the conclusion that I no longer know what I'm doing wrong with mandrels. :gar-La; BTW, which one would you use on the HF 34706?

Mt-2. You match the mandrell to the taper in the lathe. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the type of pen you want to turn!

The mandrel will have a ~1/4"shaft (perfect for slimline pens) but you must buy bushings now for each series of pen you wish to turn. Pen kits should say which bushing set to use as well as which size drill you'll need to bore the blank. Larger pens (Wall Street II, Eurpoean, Premier Cigar, etc.,) will use different bushings to hold the blank centered on the mandrel shaft as well as providing a gauge diameter for the end of the blank.
See, now you gotta buy more STUFF! :eusa_danc

I think it'll be a #2.
