Been wanting to build a wooden log caliper with international rule on one side and Doyle on the other. The caliper jaws would need to be about 3' long that way I could scale a 6' diameter standing tree. Would like board toot measurements for common log lengths (8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20). Does anyone know where I can buy one? I would like to see if they are available before I go and build one.

Just think of a regular hand held machinist caliper - but only a lot bigger.

Thanks

Thanks Guys - Dave I think you found almost what I envisioned.

The problem with the log rule is you have to fell the tree to measure it. I really would like to be able to better estimate standing trees. The way it is now I wrap a tape around the tree divide by 3 to find the diameter, estimate the height by running a tape up the tree - then check the log scale to estimate BF - it would be nice to have it all on a caliper - seems easy enough to make too.

Thanks again
