I have access to a small woodlot, about 12 acres, and I'd like to find a Hickory tree on it.
Whether there are ANY hickorys on it or not, frankly, I have no idea.
Problem is, except for spotting shagbark hickorys in the woods when I lived "up north", I don't know as though I could recognise one.:dontknow:
I've been looking at pics and getting info from Google and such, but figured I'd seek a little "surefire way to ID" advice from the sage members here as well.
Can ya help a guy out????

Tom - I can completely relate to your question, especially when there are no leaves for 40 ~ 50' up in the air. To complicate maters there are several hickory species in north Carolina. I'll see what I can dig up for you to help you identify one that'll make good lumber...

Tom - here's a few weblinks I found that may help you on your search.

From the best of my memory - the good ones for lumber that I have first hand experience with are Shagbark, Pecan, Mockernut and Pignut - Have not cut Water but have bitter nut - Bitter nut don't make for the best lumber and has a tendency to want to twist up bad, so try and shy away from that if you can.

Pignut Hickory - http://www.thejump.net/hunting/plant-id/pignut-hickory.htm

Shagbark Hickory - http://www.thejump.net/hunting/plant-id/shagbark-hickory.htm

Pecan - http://www.thejump.net/hunting/plant-id/pecan.htm

Water Hickory - http://www.thejump.net/hunting/plant-id/water-hickory.htm

Bitter Nut Hickory - http://www.ibiblio.org/pic/NCTrees/bitternuthickory.htm

Mockernut Hickory - http://www.ibiblio.org/pic/NCTrees/mockernuthickory.htm

Thanks

Thanks folks!

I coerced a tree service friend into finding me a "leaf sample" from a little bitty tree right near the backyard, but I've no idea what specific hickory it is.
But I got my best people on it right now.....:icon_thum
