Hello everyone, I'm out in Goldsboro, NC and my neighbor recommended the site. I've really only build small tables/shelves and some picket furniture before. But I'd like to find a lathe and start turning.

Greetings! Sounds like you've got the bug. You will find lots of turners hanging out here. Be warned, the term "the Dark Side" is thrown about liberally when it comes to wood spinning.

When someone who leaves the realm of flat work for turning, we call it going over to "the Dark Side".

Enjoy!
Jim

Glad you joined us, Jeff :icon_thum
But be wary :widea:
One of the largest Dark Side (spinny) Vortexs is located in your area.

If you hear, "My Name is Earl" . . . watch out

Hey Jeff,

Glad you Joined the Site.... And I live right next door, so whenever you want to head down the slippery slope of the Darkside (Aka WoodTurning), Come on over and Bring Amy. We can start out small with a pen, or go for it with a bowl. :icon_thum :gar-Bi

And then when you have got your feet wet, you can go visit this guy (Earl) with me; My Samurai Segmented Master, to see what he turns in person.
Here is some of his work: http://www.ncwoodworker.net/pp/showgallery.php?cat=1152

Again Welcome, and learn all you can from these fine woodworkers~!!! :gar-Bi

I've been looking around, and I'm interested in something like this:

http://www.rikontools.com/productpage_70-100.htm

What other things should I look into, as far as chucks, tools, etc?

Just my opinion, but you could get the one Jeremy reccomended and save money in my opinion here: http://charlotte.craigslist.org/tls/1393604907.html $400 and comes with everything you'll need to get started.

Of course then again it is in Charlotte and that's a long drive.

My other opinion is, for $225+tax with a 20% off coupon to HF you could get this: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=34706 and turn everything that little one can plus much more, as you can turn legs, bats, and have more room to get into the bowls. This is the same one I have and Earl has.

Here's a pic of one of Earls turnings in progress on the HF lathe (HF= Harbor Freight)

Then get one of these ( and there on sale, Man :BangHead: I always miss the sales: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2020042/18872/1-x-8-TPI-Self-Centering-4-Jaw-Chuck.aspx

And one of these to hold the bowls: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2020042/18877/Large-Flat-Jaws-Chuck.aspx

And one of these for pen turning: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2003759/2325/2-MT-Mandrel.aspx

I think that might be about it to get started. Oh and then or before, we can head over to Earls, and I am sure he would show you how to make a Tool or 2 or 5, or I can~!!! And maybe if you ask real nice, he can help you make some more face plates for about $1 each instead of $8 each and wasting gas for this: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98004

Anyway I hope I helped you out, Will talk more tomorrow about it all when I come to borrow the Mower.:gar-Bi
