I've learned a lot about rot resistance on this project. Mostly that rot resistance is based on heartwood only and that sapwood is not considered rot resistant regardless of species.

Yep - your 100% correct and that's why I suggested the heartwood of cypress in post 16.

I've been meaning to post "the book" on mills custom sawing but have not gotten around to it yet. "The book" is everything you would ever want to know about lumber and what lumber suppliers dont want you to know. It's a huge book and will take you a good month to read though and comprehend.

I'm sure I will make lots of "friends" when I do post "the book" and that's why I have been reluctant to post "the book". But you know I have never given a rats ### about what people think of me - so why start now?. I believe every woodworker should be able to educate themselves, dispite how ####ed off lumber suppliers may get. I was given "the book" many years ago by a fellow saywer who taught me the ropes about sawmilling with advise of using with caution.

"The book" is freely available via the US Government but like most things with the government you have to know what you are looking for and where to look. With "the book" you will be armed with knowledge to know when someone either simply doesn't know what they are talking about or trying to pull the wool over your eyes. For this reason "the book" should be used with caution.

Maybe the Fountain of Youth isn't a fountain at all. Maybe it's a way of looking at things. A way of thinking.

If you decide on cedar, check out Scott Smith's ERC stash.

I picked up about 50 board feet from him last week to use for a raised garden and after planing, I wished that I had used it on a more deserving project. Very pretty stuff, very little sap wood and a terrific odor!

Price was great too.

Thanks for this. I picked up about 80 bd ft today of mostly ERC heart and am feeling pretty positive about my boat deck. If nothing else it will smell wonderful. Also Scott was a super nice guy and has some beautiful lumber down there.

I also never realized the eastern red cedar is rated at 900 Janka, higher than SYP.

I have (somewhere) a printed copy I got in the mid-90's never did read it all the way through.

Nice excerpt on decay resistance.

That's "the book" all 463 pages worth...

It doesn't all look this good but it's some pretty nice cedar. Milling it down is a lot of work though. At this point I have it planed to a consistent thickness and rough cut to length. I'm going to plane it once more then straighten the edges.

That's some nice ERC for NC. Most ERC I've cut in NC had heart rot. That stuff you got from Scott is real clean. ERC splits easy when you use a pointed fastener. So ensure you predrill and counter bore your screw holes and dont over tighten your screws and you should be OK.
