Hey everyone! In this fun discussion style video, I explain to you guys why I don't attempt more advance style patterns on the channel. it does boil down to time constraints but, in between other projects, I have made a few more advance style projects on the scroll saw that I share with you in this video. I would be open to doing more advance style patterns but, you may not get a weekly scroll saw project video if that makes any sense due to time. Give me your thoughts and I hope you all like the video!

You could do weekly scroll saw projects that are updates of the complex patterns rather then a completed project video.

I would say how complicated should depend on if it is for personal gratification or marketing. I am new to this, but don't understand doing other published patterns and I would not think about signing a pattern that was not my original.
Several people I know sign their name and date but also write on the back the wood(s) used and the name of the designer. You see this more frequently in intarsia and other complicated works.

As a lifelong artist I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. Copying other people's work is fine for a student or beginner but at some point (before you start selling) you should develop your own designs and style. Even making videos of producing other people's designs is very negative to me. Especially when done poorly.

It is common for Scroll saw artists to purchase patterns from scroll saw pattern designers. I don’t draw very well. I can add embellishments sometimes. But I can pick woodgrain that will add to a design. I can pick wood color that is perfect. Sometimes THAT is what makes the difference in the product.

I sign everything because I make only what I design --- or do I?
When I design a coffee table or end table or you name it, I would bet that of the millions of like pieces made over the millennia, there is at least one piece (and probably many) that is very, very close to "my" design. I'd bet that of all the bowls and vases turned and spoons carved by members of this forum, relatively few would be truly unique even if the design was intended to be original.
Both the Chicago Symphony and New York Philharmonic have copyrighted their performances of Holst's The Planets even though it's the same music - the same "design". It's the recordings (the making, or the scroll sawing or the turning) that's copyrighted. And those recordings are based on that conductor's and those musicians' interpretation of the printed music.
So where to draw the line? For me, I feel the design is an integral part of my work, but others may revel solely in the making. Maybe with hand tools, when the task might be easier with power tools. Maybe with milk paint instead of traditional stain.

I think it boils down to what individuals are comfortable with in their art and craft - was enough added to the design to call it one's own?

Getting in my 2 cents before the pennies are gone...
