A few years ago a good friend of mines mother asked me if I could make some gifts for her and her cousins from a log that was taken from their grandparents home. It was a log of Maple that had more checks than a bank. I told her I would do what I could. I was able to actually turn 32 little Christmas trees that she adored. I saved a chunk of the log and figured I would turn a bowl out of it one day as the spalting was incredible.

This summer I talked to her daughter and asked if she would like me to make her mom something special out of the remainder to which she excitedly said “absolutely.”

So after offering to do it I looked closer at the piece and realized that the checks were far too many to turn a solid bowl so I decided to make a segmented piece for her.

Hope you enjoy it.

Spalted Maple, Peruvian Walnut and Dyed (stabilized) Maple Burl.

Friction polish finish
