The chuck on my Delta DP chuck ist binding in several places. I have tried lubrication up in the chuck and through the outside top, but no help. Has anyone had this problem, anyone know of any other solutions?:icon_scra

Sounds to me like you either have "trash" up in the threads, or there is thread damage from overtightening or overheating. Might not be worth tearing it apart depending on how much you can get a new or used one for.

You can take it apart and polish the threads inside then grease and reassemble. Do you use the same size bits most of the time? This causes repeated stress in the same spot and the jaws will start to bind over time.

Most folks just get a new one, in fact I got a great deal on a tabletop press that had this problem because the guy didn't know he could replace the chuck.

I rebuilt b4man's chuck and I think it is still working, at least I haven't heard otherwise.

If your chuck does not have bearings that is a great upgrade.

If you need a chuck, I probably have at least 2. They are keyed chucks. Just let me know. I'll assume they are a Jacobs 3 taper

Ok, Mike I looked this thing up and down and can't for the life o me figure out how to take it apart. Any tips?

It looks like this one, and is a JT33:

That striped part is pressed on the the geared part. You can knock it off by carefully tapping it all around a little at a time with a small cold chisel.

Mount the solid part with the key holes in a vise. Try to leave as much exposed as possible.

Don't try to force it all off at once. Just gentle taps all the way around.

Or if you have a hydraulic press you can just press it out.

Either way be careful not to squeeze or bend the casing. (the striped part).

Once you get the case off be sure to mark the jaws with a scribe ( 1, 2 and 3), They MUST go back in the same hole they come out of. They have screw threads on the back that have to line up with screw threads in the chuck body.

Mike's links may cover the details, but make sure you have the chuck jaws/teeth fully extended before you try to remove the outer sleeve. you can damage the tooth threads if the teeth are retracted.
