I am having a problem with my lock nut on my mandrel coming lose - it tightes up opposite the rotation of the lathe should it not stay tight? - has anyone else had this problem? How often would you change out your pen mandrel or do you have to?

Mine does not come loose by itself. Put a small amt of Elmer's white glue on the threads. About the time you think it has cured, screw the nut off. Do not use carpenter's glue, too strong. This will increase the diameter of the shaft enough to tighten it up slightly. Mandrel should not need replacing until you bend it with overtightening. BE SURE YOU USE A 60° TAIL STOCK LIVE CENTER. My mandrels are at least 6 years old and worked today for seven pens!
