Lathe Upgrade

it has me thinking of my own small lathe problems.:icon_scra
Which leads me to ask all of you, I am looking at upgrading from my old 1942 shop smith to a older but large Rockwell lathe, and wondering....would a older Rockwell wood lathe, with four speeds, be reversible?...in order to take advantage of the sanding benefit?
If it is not, How involved would it be to make it reversible?:dontknow:
