Just finished this carving. It is the top of a newel post. This will be mounted on top of an existing post and then trimmed out under the spacer and around the base of the lion head.
I have no idea what the client will apply as a finish. It was carved with hand tools, air hammers and cleaned up with a foredom tool with various burrs.
Comments and critique welcome.

Awesome carving! Looks like you did an excellent job on the symmetry (sp?). Is this going to be stained or painted? What wood did you use? I gotta try carving in the round one of these days!

Thanks for all the support with the great comments. The material is hard maple. Not the easiest to carve or sand. Hopefully the client will put a natural finish on it. If not I hope the finishing person knows what they are doing or it will be a mess.
