Jointers

A table saw saws, a drill press drills, a sander sands, a router routs, a planer planes and a jointer makes flat edges and faces. They all play some part in creating a wood joint but only the first five have names describing what they do. Why doesn’t a jointer have a more descriptive name and what would it be? Flattener?;). I have had one for years but have never asked the question until now. What do you think?

The jointer derives its name from its primary function of producing flat edges on boards prior to joining them edge-to-edge to produce wider boards. The use of this term probably arises from the name of a type of hand plane, the jointer plane, which is also used primarily for this purpose.

"Planer" is the normal term in the UK and Australia for what is called a "jointer" in North America, where the former term refers exclusively to a thickness planer.

Same goes for "saw dust." it isn't saw dust, but rather wood dust. Spell checker always has a good time with the word "jointer."
