Finishing Challenged

I am finishing challenged. I need to start learning how to finish correctly. First off, is there a reference online that gives a breakdown on more common finishing techniques? What would be a good book to start out with? And, no, I don't want "Wood Finishing for Dummies"!!

I don't know of any books in particular, but you may want to search for books by Jeff Jewitt, or Bob Flexner, as these are well known names in the field of finishing.
