Have an old chest was Great Gdpa's circa late 1800-early 1900 s. Was a mess, several layers of some paint and other coating.
Tried the Murphys oil but no go, so I sanded all but the inside of the Lid. Used Behr stain with poly, one coat didnt want to lose the dings, or cover the grain.

That turned out nice!
I LOVE those handles. I paid some serious money for a chest that had some similar, but... they were quite small and would not fit the chest I was hoping they would!

That’s a cool little chest, it’s great that you were able to revive it. You can think of your family history and what they were thinking and feeling while you are using it.

Thanks for all the kind words, and yes I often wonder about where the chest traveled with him, the dings for me are part of his Journey.
