Michael,

I'm not qualified to offer much help but I can toss out some observations.

Item No. 1 appears to show two different planes. The first pix (or an optical/photo illusion) shows both the tote and knob at the edges of the iron. The other pixs look okay.

Item No 4. Looks dusty, but not not necessarily rusty :icon_thum

OK... Given the choices you presented, here are my initial impressions....

I agree with Sapwood - two different planes pictured. For $35 shipped I would pass on that No 5 anyway.

From the pics this looks like a type 13. Pre-SW era, expect it to have a frog adjust screw although you can't see it pictured. You would have to count on making or buying another tote, and you can't tell much from the pics about other damage but I don't see anything jumping out. For $20 shipped it may be worth the gamble, assuming you don't mind making or replacing the tote. Buying a replacement tote will probably add another $10-30 to the total cost, depending how you shop.

This one looks to be either type 9 or 10. I can't make out a frog adjust screw, so I'm guessing type 9. Wood looks intact, blade is a little short. Seller does not specify shipping but has overall good feedback. Assuming $30 or so shipped, not too bad really.

This one is post-SW era, probably type 16 or maybe 18? $29 shipped... so-so. I would personally rather have #2 or #3 but that's just me.

NO. ;-)

As always, buying on ebay is a gamble. You're taking a risk and can get a good deal... but you're taking a risk! ;-)

I'm no expert. Have bought 3 on e-bay and am satisfied with what I got. Monty & others can give you a better read

My observations:
#4 my top choice: Appears to be study 14 or 15, which was the best years. For $20 I would "Buy it now". You may get it cheaper by bidding, but my experience is that if its worth it, the price will sky-rocket up in the last 12 hours.

#3: Second choice: newer but all pieces are there

#1: No cracks in tote and knob (which you can make, but no mention of the body casting, especially the sole around the mouth

#2: Looks like an older model which may not have an adjustable frog, whcih would limit its adjustment as a scrub plane

#5: A lot of rust. May be good but will be a lot of work to clean up.

My $.02 worth:lol:
