Probably like many of you, I try to make ornaments for kids and grandkids every year. Here are the ornaments for 2024. It is always a fun project, but most of the time the ornaments are more similar to each other than this year. I thought I would vary it a little this year, and try a few different things. Enjoy! and Merry Christmas!

Looking great!

How are those constructed Mark? A top, a bottom and a hollow middle?

Actually it's a one piece turning. 2 inch rectangle about 5 inches long with 7/8 inch holes drilled in the side that when turned become the windows. Then there is a 1 1/2 inch hole bored into the bottom end to hold the electronic candle. The key is to turn it round but leave it "fat" until the bottom section is completely turned and textured (or beaded); then turn the windows to final depth; and finally turn the top to whatever is desired. I had a couple blow up on me when I turned to final diameter before texturing the bottom.

I really like the candle idea - didnt catch it on first glance. How is it turned on?
These are from Hobby Lobby and simply have a switch on the bottom to allow them to be turned on. The candle is press fitted or hot glued up into the bottom of the ornament.

In that case I’m impressed you’re able to keep such clean color transitions between the top, middle and bottom sections.

For example you’ve got one with black colored beads next to a white colored middle.

The white is actually a stain to look like whitewash. All the stains went on first and where they were bands were applied with a very small artist type brush. The black beads and red beads are actually India ink instead of paint. They were colored with the lathe running as slow as possible using a "pointed" brush that was a fine as a pencil point. Since they were dark colors, they covered any stain leaching outside where I wanted it. It took time to do, but was not that hard. I learned a lot.

I like those tea light LED candles and can see lots of uses for them. Any stock numbers? The ones I saw use the common CR2032 battery.
Cross bored holes in a turning can really produce some great results. I did them for years on plain stock but hadn't thought of using the lights.

These were just a 16 pack at Hobby Lobby. About $12. There are all kinds including some that will cut themselves off after a period of time. I just picked a fairly cheap version as it suited my application. These do use the CR 2032 battery and actually came with extra batteries.

While I hate to promote that on-line market place - this is where I bought mine:
12 Pack Flameless Led Tea Lights Candles with timer battery operated,
Built-in 6Hours,6 Hours On and 18 Hours Off in 24 Hours Cycle Automatically,
flickering flameless tealights candles in Warm Yellow

Great job! In the greatest act of flattery, I hope to plagiarize your idea for next year's Christmas.
