I have a chance to grab a few(5, to be exact) nice straight sections of oak log, recently cut, about 12" thru.
They are only about 3' long however:-(.
Similary, I can have some 4' pieces of longleaf pine, about 8" thru.
I don't suspect the pine is good for much of anything, but I thought I'd...
If a person wanted to try their hand at hewing a pine log into a beam, via adz, broadaxe or however, is it preferable to use a green log or something that has dried to a degree?
I scored two maple logs this weekend, from a wind-blown tree on my Dad's place in Black Mountain. It was the tree my sister and I had our swings in a half century ago. Rumor has it that my Dad also played in it as boy. Needless to say, I hope to be able to make a few keepsakes out of the lumber...
Hi All, it's been awhile. I have come up with a rather primitive form of moving logs, short distance's. It's the way the poor man shuffles logs around the yard. Check it out.

The orange saw mill is mine, there's a lot there for my WM to chew on and there's lots of nice BW logs in the pile just to the left of my mill.

I was going thru some paperwork and found this chart. I thought it would be helpful to people who are new to turning to understand what to do with a log they want to cut up into turning blanks.
So I thought I would post it here for everyone. Hope it helps...
While this looks like a path, it is actually a six-foot diameter tree on the ground. From where the photographer stands there is a good 60 more feet of tree behind her. The closest figure in the picture is 45 inches tall, and the one way in the back is over 6 feet tall. As a sawyer, there was...
Started milling a 32" dia 15' long American elm crotch log today, wanted to make a pictorial. American elm is some of the prettiest wood I ever seen. And we won't see much of it either; Dutch elm disease has just about wiped out the entire United Sates population. American elm of any size is a...
In my quest to spend a gift certificate, I have come up with another possibility. Power tenon cutters to make rustic log/limb furniture.
Anyone ever use these? What would be the best size to get to make small benches and little furniture pieces? And any recommendations on native hardwoods...
I went over to my co-workers house today to do some target practice with our .22s and noticed a nearby butchery of trees. I took a walk around and found some Oak and what appears to be Maple. I brought back a 3 foot log of the oak and a 2-2.5 foot of a thin log maple...
