When you have a massive xxx ton hydraulic press? (I think they said 200 ton, but don't quote me on that)
I had the opportunity to visit a lab at the NCSU Department of Forestry and Natural Resources today. A couple of professors want to build some bus shelters using mass timber composite wood products and they reached out to the City of Raleigh Transportation office to partner.
I got to see lots of cool old iron, plus some new. This press was taken and rehabbed from an old furniture factory for $20k total.
The lab was originally built in the 60's to teach furniture building. Wish I had taken more photos. Below was the quite impressive monster press they use to make their composite wood product. Basicallly gluing up a bunch of 2x6's.
