What Shrub/tree is this?

My wife and I got this a few yrs back. She doesn’t like it now and wanted it gone.After cutting it I saw the yellow wood which I haven’t seen before. What is this?

Definitely mahonia. I have a few dozen. Planted one and the birds did the rest. Does yours get clusters of blue berries? Birds love them

Yes it gets the berries

I tore out one of mine that was growing through the fence. It had the same bright yellow wood. though tit would be interesting to try working with but none of mine have individual branches/trunks that are sizeable. BTW if you want to get rid of it permanently, you’ll have to dig up the roots. These are prolific and hardy plants
