I'm very much in the combo Jointer/Planer camp as well.
Think of a Jointer with the infeed table on a hinge that allows you to rotate it until it lays flat on the outfeed table.
You then have a space below which should have a height-adjustable table (and fixed cutterhead) not visible (possibly missing?) in the photo above. It helps if you realize the apparent dust hood is just a piece of ductwork that the owner has strapped above the cutterhead to catch the waste.
So I googled and found this thread of the Inca jointer/planer on Woodnet. The one pictured above has the outfeed tables and a shroud removed but, I think we have a winner. Jim
