Poplar at Lowe’s?
It’s a bit pricey but you only need a little.

I was assuming he was interested in tropical Tulipwood, not Tulip Poplar. I bought this piece 15 years ago for a gift for a turner that didn't work out. I thought I remember it was called Tulipwood - it looks like it was sealed or waxed, still weighs 6 lbs:

Would these pieces be too small? Sorry for the bad pics, the ruler is 6" for scale. I have a 45" long piece with some checks and a foot long crack. If you can use it you're welcome to it for whatever it costs to ship it.
