Turning Purpleheart

My first experience with turning purpleheart today. Seems I should have stayed out of the shop. Bandsaw giving me fits, got that resolved.
But on to the Purpleheart. I couldnt seem to get a rhythm going. Lots of resharpening tools... had a screw break off in the wood on my faceplate (yes, I pre drilled). Finally got the outside done, but came in from the heat before finishing the inside. Did I just have a rough day or is Purpleheart difficult?

Might be a little of both. But I don’t have AC in my shop and the last couple days have been challenging

Purple Heart is one of my least favorites to turn - it splinters, dulls tools, and I’ve just never been a fan of the look of it.

Good to know that it wasnt just me. I think it was compounded by my band saw issues and the heat. No AC in my shop either. I'm nearly done with this one and I have another blank of Purpleheart that I'll set aside for later when I want to torture myself!
I have read though that in order to keep the purple look to it, one should set out in the sun a bit before applying a finish to it, so may try that.

Figured I'd reply here with the results of my moaning on the purple heart.
I've got a couple other pieces of it, but havent turned anything else.
This was the platter/bowl I was working on. Did have a little tear out on the right side as you can see in the pic, but the rest looks ok.

I tolerate Purpleheart. I have to.

As much as I dislike working with the stuff, my customers adore it. So, I make things out of Purpleheart.

You might try a #12 or even #14 sheet metal screw. The threads are broader and the metal is harder.

Purpleheart is difficult and hard on cutting tools but does make for great looking bowls and platters. Since I buy all my screws and fasteners from Lowe's in Lenoir I have not have had any issues.
