Over the Christmas holidays I decided to do some turning. I used a piece of Claro Walnut that I bought at The Woodworking Shop in Raleigh. I came from their economy bin which may explain a lot. To my suprise as soon as I began to work with it the shop started smelling like a horse stable that hadn't been cleaned out lately. Since this was my first experience with Claro I was wondering if all of it smells this way or maybe my hunk really was "cured" in a barn floor? BTW it turned beautifully and the coulor is great.

You have a nice piece of wood with a high concentration of juglone-hence the pronounced odor. Kinda like old sweaty socks that have been sitting in a dark corner closet for too long.

The highest concentrations of juglone are found in the tree roots. You probably have a piece of root stock and that would also explain why it turned out so nice. :icon_cheers
