On a whim today I decided to replace the oak base on my open throat router plane with a slippery plastic base. It does make a bit of difference by sliding easier.

you might have just inspired me. I’ve been thinking of making the Paul Sellers router plane. Maybe I’ll make a slippery version

Mike, looks like you had a good "whim"!
The router plane’s open throat was supposed to help visibility but it also can make it tippy near your work edges. I think that the hole I made will give me enough visibility.
