I may have to take a picture later to explain this, but you can also suspend a digital caliper over a surface, open the caliper down to the surface and zero it and then it will measure height. Those are often on sale for $10 and sometimes less at HF and the suspension mechanism can be something as simple as spring clamping it to the corner of an inverted U cut out of plywood.

I have one and like it. It was an impulse buy but it turns out a to be very convenient and accurate way to set router bit height in particular.
