I remember my first time using a sharp plane and getting a curl the length of the board.
I assume folks coming to our Outreach tent would get the same feeling and all it takes is a few sharp planes
But I want them to also make something so I am attempting to develop a simple project to use the curls
No don't laugh, this is a beta version that need some refinement
Grab a couple of sharp planes - Shown are a bench plane kit from Ron Hock and a spill plane from Red Rose Reproductions
Now have the folks make some curls from a few boards - 1" to 1/2" thick straight grain
Add a simple jig and wrap the curls around the pegs
Make a spill for the stem
Assemble and you have a flower
- I think using wood that is not so dry will work better
- Adding some dye on the edge of the board would add some color
- Should take less than 20 minutes to make one
- A small turned vase would also be nice
Comments and suggestions are welcome
Here is the next version
Much simpler form - just wind curl around pegs and then pull out pegs
The only tools needed are a couple of sharp planes, a glue gun and a hole punch
These will look better in a turned weed pot
