I am having some trouble deciding which planes to get? I have found a Stanley #4 type 11 and Stanley #5 type 11 for 50 bucks each. This sounds like the way to go to me. There is also a Stanley 5 1/2C type 10 that is refurbished. Could that take the place of both a regular 4 and 5? Work has already been done to it and it comes with a Hock blade. For the two type 11's I would have to put in some work removing rust and tuning and buy new blades.

Any thoughts???

Personally I'd get the 4 and the 5 1/2. A 4 is great or smoothing smaller panels you can't get around well with a larger plane. A 5 1/2 will give you the width of a 4 1/2 plane, but the length of the 5. I find that I use my refiirbed Stanley 5 1/2 almost as much as my LN 4 1/2. With hock blade and proper tuning you can get a stanley give you a cut quality that will match just about any plane out there.

Just my .02. :) I don't think you could go wrong anyway you go.

Good Luck,

John
