I use these floats for making side escapement planes. The edge floats shown are used to enlarge and true the sides of the mortise. Face floats for smoothing the inside surfaces and cheek floats are used for those problem areas where you have a hump.

Floats come in all different sizes and shapes. They are adapted to a specific area. I have one that is rectangular with one "safe" edge that is flat. I don't really use this when making planes, but it has come in handy when doing a through mortise for a mortise and tenon joint.

RedRose Reproductions offers a complete line of floats, but they are not cheap. I've found they aren't too difficult to make. Just takes some patience and a good set of files.
