Hi guys. I know that this was discussed the other night on the conference call, and as usual, I was busier typing than talking, but I do need to ask, is someone asking people to join a fantasy sports league a violation of the sight policies?

I guess it could be considered gambling if there is money involved, but it is a pretty popular thing and a lot of leagues are free. I don't consider myself a gambling man. I don't go to casinos and I don't play online poker or other games, but I do love fantasy football and partake in a few of those leagues every season.

Anyway, I know that it is not woodworking related and if a member soliciting other members to join a fantasy sports league in any way puts our non-profit status in jeopardy then I completely understand not allowing it. However, I saw that guy's offer as pretty harmless as it was posted in the OT forum and didn't seem controversial. It didn't interest me as I don't really follow Nascar, but I did want to inquire further about it. I am by no means taking a side on this one. I just wanted a further explanation about it.

Thanks!

Trent. It is in NCWW's best interest to avoid even an appearance of impropriety. We do not want to be endorsing anything that MIGHT relate to gambling. I do not think we even need to ask if money is involved here. We do not want to set a precedent. I would not want to do this even if if was some sort of woodworking fansasy league. (If there could be such a thing.)

Understood. I definitely see the need to set a precedent on that. The more I think about it, it could end up being a pretty popular topic and if it is in any way related to gambling then it should not be allowed. Thanks!

There is another world apart from here where people can do whatever they care to do - and do!
A friend played a football league at his work and won several hundred dollars off it. The man who set it up pocketed the same amount - no matter who wins.
I consider it a form of gambling, not sure about the law's view, but from what I've seen someone win, most lose - and the creator comes out ahead.
Wouldn't matter if it was one of our members or a name I've never heard of - the implications are suspect, and not something I want to participate in or support in this forum. For someone not a member to approach the group just struck me as odd. If they really liked woodworkers, I'd think they might look into joining the group instead. But that's just me.

Now if we all want to start a pool on who OOPS big time next - paints their shop a peach color or something like that next... I'll take ScottM and his new shop in progress.
It can't ALL go well for him <ducking as I say that>

No problem. It is good to have this discussion as it insures that we are all on the same page or at least have the same understanding.:thumbs_up
