Moxon vise of sorts

Building a proper woodworking bench is far down the list of priorities right now, so I took a break from working on the shop today and whipped up an improvised woodworking vise along the lines of a Moxon vise. I had almost everything on hand except for the pipe nipples. I also sprung for some cork sheet to use as a liner, though that probably wasn't really necessary. We'll see how it works out.

Thanks for posting. Please keep the record of the build going and compile it for an addition to the Resource forum. Jim Creasman has a similar post there already.

Spent a little more time fiddling with the vise this evening.

First thing I wanted to tackle was to make it a little less floppy, especially when mounting. I had an idea earlier today so I gave it a try.

A 1" hole saw worked perfect for screwing onto the end of a 3/4" pipe. A 3" hole saw was just a little too big for the outer diameter. The good thing is that it made the jaw flop around a lot less. It also put it at a bit of an angle relative to the face (tight at the top, loose at the bottom). This may be OK, but I expect I'll need to shave a flat in the circle to tune the angle.

Next task was to trim the cork flush with the top on the bench side.

Finally, I swapped out the F-clamps for some T-track clamps to get a little more clearance and gave it a test run. Works great! The cork is very grippy.
