Borrow, rent, or, if cheap enough, buy. I only need it for 40' of conduit and ~4 bends. Suggestions for alternative methods of bending 1" conduit welcomed with appreciation.

Local Muffler Shop - may have small dies. HFT has a Ram kit for $150. Ask an electrician to loan you his (can you bring the conduit to his shop?) I have a 3/4" conduit bender. If the 1" is similar in design, should be something you could borrow. Check an Electrical Distributor to see if there is such a simple tool as the 1/2" and 3/4" versions - then ask if they'll rent one. Tell 'em your story, you might find a shop willing to help.

Found some videos on youtube. This was probably the simplest solution:
' section of 1" EMT unless you've got quite the spacious shop! This link talks about making bends with precise dimensions and demonstrates the way an electrician would put a ninety in a forty footer:
Definitely worth a watch if bending conduit was not part of your job description.

If it's EMT then you can rent a bender at the big box stores usually at a pretty cheap rate. Thick wall, you can talk to local electrical contractors and as long as it's a one off they usually will be happy to make the bends for a few bucks and pimp you for future work in the meantime.

At least that's what I've found. As long as you aren't a competitor for their business, they see you as a possible future customer if you have a bigger job. They collect a few bucks and get your good will.

Gene, I'll have to check but I believe I have a hand bender in my garage that I know will bend 3/4". I'm not sure about 1" conduit but I can check and let you know. The difficult part is it's here in Chapel Hill! Of course you're welcome to come visit and spend the day turning with me :)

You did not specify what sort of bends you needed to make. For one, I was assuming ninety degree bends. I noticed you mentioned forty foot of 1" Conduit. Are you talking about four ten foot sections/lengths?

Are you adding a circuit or building a hot house perhaps? If building hoop house for a garden or farm - really large diameter bends, the stuff we've been suggesting is not appropriate at all.

Fill us in, we might be able to be more helpful.
