This is a former door kick cut down and installed on a rifle. Thie is for a left handed shooter.
First you have to pencil out what size you would like. After that, you heat the brass to make it soft and bendable. In this case, I wanted pierced openings in the side plates(just taste).
You hold the cut and filed pieces over a candle and get the back covered with soot. This allows you to tap the piece and leave an accurate footprint on the stock. Now the chisel work.
Take a look at the photos in the album at the above address. Putting candle soot on the brass can be used to set a lock in a desk or elsewhere depending on the product you're building.
