Funny you should post that - I was just watching one of the old episodes of the Woodwright's shop online (there's a previous forum thread w/ link), and he does a segment (season 2600) with John Reed Fox where they talk about Japanese planes. They use a high-grade laminate steel planing iron, in a simple wooden block; the bottom of the block is actually beveled, unlike the perfectly flat tuned sole I was always told was key. He finishes sharpening using a 30,000 grit stone. He produced a shaving that was 5 microns thick. Very interesting, and the guy does some amazing work - all hand-built, and some crazy joinery.

Very impressive! The guy making that plane was VERY good!

I had heard about the planing contests in Japan that measured thickness of shavings, but I didn't know they did lengths of shavings as well.
