I happened upon this Stanley scraper plane in bunch of hand tools I purchased a while back. Didn't know anything about it until recently when I looked it up. Still only know what I read.

I think you've been around here enough bash, to know that when someone happens upon a really great deal, some folks would say you suck! But not me, nope, but I sure am guilty of coveting that little plane. Congratulations on an unbelievably fantastic score!

Nice s-c-r-a-p-e-r.

Or do you also use a planner?

Thanks for catching the spelling error. I'm always learning something on this site. And FYI, I do use a planner - it is a rather plain one to help me plan when to plane.

........and that's why you hafta be pretty plain spoken around here..... :D

I didn't know the old scraper planes were so popular. I'll need to see what I can do with the one I have that's been collecting dust for oh so many years.

I once made scrap with a plane even though I just planned to scrape with it.

Yeah. Seems they are rather rare, and that collectors (rather than violin and fly rod makers) have made them somewhat valuable. This one had the blade adjusted as low an angle as possible and had obviously been used backwards (knob in front) as a block plane. When I found out value, I offered to give back to seller but was told "good for you" and "does it look like I need the money?". Funny thing is, I bought socket sets, wrenches, etc., and 3 or 4 planes were thrown in (others are basically worthless). Not sure what I will do with it - likely it will pass on to one of my boys some day.

I would like to get an opinion on condition, and maybe help sharpening and setting up as a scraper some time.

No help with the condition part, but sharpening and setting up is straightforward and then a bit of trial & error to fine tune the cut.

Here's some good information about scraper plane blades in general...
