Framing and board and batten siding

So I am enlarging my shop by enclosing a shed wing. I’d like to match the b and b siding that exists. How to attach the b and b boards is the question. I originally planned to put in horizontal nailers to the traditional stud framing to nail the board to. Now I am thinking osb sheathing first is not that much expense and would make nailing idiot proof. If many of the nails will not hit the framing directly, what thickness of osb should I use that will securely hold the vertical boards? Or should I consider something else? The top coat is 1x8 pt pine

Whether or not you cover it first with OSB, I would still install horizontal nailing slats between the studs. I don't have confidence that OSB will hold the nails that well. If you do go with just the OSB, I recommend ring shank nails.

Go ahead and do horizontal purlins at 16" +- O.C. You're not talking that much money and it's kinda sketchy depending on any kind of sheathing, OSB or plywood, to hold up B & B siding.
