Thanks for the comments guys! I cut a 3/4" rabbet for the post bottom and brought in screws from the bottom, and glued. Very tight joint. I then used 8/4 scraps to block the top of the post on each side. The blocks were screwed and glued to the top, then the post was glued and screwed to the blocking. Again, very sturdy. I used oak dowels to attach the bread board ends, and put walnut plugs in for contrast.
