My grandson is heavy into fly fishing and wants to get into fly tying and has asked me if I could help him out by building the wood portion of the "Fly Tying Station". Since I know nothing about what's a good plan I need some help here. If anyone has plans for Fly Tying Station that they could share I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

Ray, This may turn out to be worse than nothing, but I hate to see someone's thread go dangling for lack of interest. So, if I may ask for your indulgence, I'll try to help ->

A few years ago, I ventured out a little way into fly tying, but because of some health problems, I never used the flies I had tied very much and ended up with the whole affair getting shelved. However, at the time I was into it, I realized (as your grandson apparently has done) that I needed some sort of 'work station'. So I made a rudimentary setup which was nothing fancy but served my needs at the time. I never really did enough tying to become what I would have considered an accomplished tyer, but I had fun with it for a short while.

What I will need to do, if you can wait a few days, is to try and dig out what I made and make a photograph or two for you. I'm assuming your grandson already has a tying vise, which is the central element of this activity. Also, I should ask, have you tried doing Google searches for topics like "fly tying workstations" or "fly tying demos" ? As I recall, there were some very imformative video clips on 'You Tube' about fly tying, and perhaps your grandson would benefit from them.

Later then,
Harvey

Ray,
My wife's uncle lives in Charlotte and he actually makes flies as a business. He is also an avid woodworker. I don't believe he frequents this site but he may have some good ideas. His website is http://troutu.com/ his contact information is on the site. His name is Jerry. Just tell him his nephew-in-law Jon from Raleigh sent you.
Thanks

I don't have a plan, but back when I was into fly tying I made myself a bench similar this: http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Shop-Journeyman-Fly-Tying-Station/product/1301151624/ It worked great. I made the base out of poplar and the upper out of red oak. Things that I didn't do and wish I had done would have been to inlay a magnet for keeping hooks, put in a section of fly foam to hold flies while the head cement dried. If I ever get back into it, I would like to make another one, but put a small drawer section underneath to store frequently used materials. Something like this: http://flytyingstation.net/gallery.html

Another alternative if something smaller is wanted would be something like this: http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Shop-WREmerger-Fly-Tying-Bench/product/11080505011323/ . Works great as a portable base for the vise.

Also, checkout http://www.flytyingforum.com/ Just like this place, the folks there are great!

Edited to add: This post is making the tying bug bite...not good; wife complains I have too many hobbies already!

Thanks for the help guys. This gives me a good starting point. May make a trip to Bass Pro Shop to see if I can see one of these in person.
