BTW: Sawstop offered TODAY to donate their patent 9,724,840 to the pulic if other manufacturers will incorporate the technology in their saws. SURPRISE the patent is expired so they are donating nothing.
But not all the supplemental ones that have not expired.

As far as releasing the technology for anyone, should KFC or Newman's Own be forced to publicize their recipes? For the patent attorney, where does intellectual property come into play?

The inventor and perfecter of a flesh sensing table saw was turned away by major manufacturers, so he started own company. Nobody has the right to boo hoo hoo about him protecting his brand.

Expecting him to destroy his own company by making if free is ludicrous and anti-capitalist.
sure if it was found to be in the interest of the common good (like could cure cancer or prevent heart disease) and they were adequately compensated for it.

The question is who decides what is adequately compensated. The (almost) free market or some bureaucrat who has their fingers in the till?
Take the inventor of the laser. Think about it. If you came up with a great idea that could make you millions, would you like someone else telling you how much you can get? It works that way in other economic systems.
So SawStop has an innovative table saw. Pretty good one, but other companies are looking at their long history and applying innovation to their tools. Prestige brands like Powermatic had better get their act together as we won't want 50 year old designs much longer. Even Delta put the tilt crank on the front FINALLY! Too bad their quality is so poor, I would have bought one for that feature. Harvey is rethinking the fence. DVR power coming to tools. So, as their patents eventually run out, they need to come up with the next big idea or be reduced to just another imported race to the bottom price brand. As Getty told us, reproducing ideas is hard.

The actual wording was "dedicate it to the public". Ignoring the active vs expired aspect, does "dedicate to the public" have any legal meaning? Or is it just feel-good empty words?

Really? You want an economic system like that? But, I can see a point in drug companies charging $8000/month for a medication while you can get it in Europe for a fraction of the cost. That may be more related to the insurance/pharma/medical complex.

Exactly. That "other economic system" we should want no part of.

The same thing applies to intellectual property. Anyone who comes up with a novel idea owns that idea. They shouldn't be forced to sell it to anyone, regardless of what the authorities define as "the public good". The marketplace should determine that.
