I Think It’s Oak?

I got a bunch of cherry from an estate sale along with this nice wide piece of oak, I think? What do you think? The last picture I sprayed some water on it.

No medullary rays indicative of the oaks. Likely ash.

I knew something didn’t look right, but it seems more yellow’ish than ash. Does ash tend to darken with age?

Pretty sure it's ash. The bark, grain and color look right to me.

Don't know for sure, but it looks like American Elm. I like Hobbit House for wood ID.

My guess would also be ash. It's a lot like oak at first glance.

Could be sassafras.
Does it smell like root beer?

Does not smell like root beer. After cross cutting to get a clean look at the end grain and comparing to examples from Hobbit House (thanks @Bill Clemmons), I believe its white ash. I couldn’t get a magnified picture but looking at the one from Hobbit House and comparing the the actual sample, it looks closer than anything else I could find in HH. I had some much lighter colored ash than this, but can see on the many examples on HH there’s a pretty wide range.

Ash bark feels a lot like cork. You should be able to push your thumbnail into easily and it will feel sort of spongy.

Looks more like ash than oak, not porous enough to be oak
